Steve Puleo’s third book is The Boston Italians:
A Story of Pride, Perseverance and Paesani, from the Years
of the Great Immigration to the Present Day. The book is described
as “a great read for the generalist and a gold mine
of information for the specialist” by Thomas H. O’Connor,
university historian at Boston College. It details the
experience of Boston’s Italian immigrants as they
battled poverty, illiteracy, and prejudice, and chronicles
their rich history in Boston up to the present day. To read personal stories from readers of the book, visit the Readers' Stories section.
The Boston Italians was named a Sons of Italy National Book Club selection for the Fall of 2007. This national organization chooses only 12 to 24 titles each year for this honor. Sons of Italy members in an estimated 700 chapters around the country discuss the books during monthly meetings. The books are also profiled in Italian America Magazine, the most widely read publication in the United States for Italian Americans.
Steve Puleo has been making many appearances to discuss his
writing, research, and inspiration for The Boston Italians,
the first full-length, 130-year history of the Italians in
Boston. Steve has woven his own family’s story through
the course of the book as illustrative of the overall fabric
of the Boston Italian experience.
